When attorney Samuel (Sam) Wong goes missing, wildlife magazine reporter Kristy Farrell thinks the disappearance may tie into her latest story concerning twenty acres of prime property that the local aquarium hopes to purchase. Sam works for multi-million dollar land developer Lucien Moray who wants to buy the property for an upscale condominium project. The waterfront community is divided on this issue like the Hatfields and McCoys with environmentalists siding with the aquarium and local business owners lining up behind Moray. Soon a body is found in a nearby inlet, the aquarium is plagued with accidents, a second murder occurs, and Kristy has a near death encounter with a nine foot bull shark. Kristy investigates the aquarium murders and discovers weak alibis and strong motives. But ferreting out the murderer isn’t Kristy’s only challenge. Her visiting widowed septuagenarian mother announces her engagement. Kristy suspects her mom’s soon to be husband is not all he appears to be. As Kristy tries find out the truth before her mother ties the knot, she also races the clock to find the aquarium killer before this killer strikes again.
I have always had an interest in wildlife and animals. I also love mysteries. It is natural that I combined my fascination in both in books. I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I have enjoyed writing them.
SOMETHING FISHY (A Kristy Farrell Mystery Book #2) by Lois Schmitt is an amateur sleuth cozy mystery featuring a female wildlife magazine feature writer who never stops asking questions. Even though this is the second book in this series, it is easily read as a standalone.
Kristy Farrell is on assignment working on two articles for the magazine, both centered around the Long Island Clam Cove Aquarium. The first article revolves around the local fight over the use of twenty acres of prime Long Island beach front and the second is a feature on deadly sea animals. Environmentalists want the land to enlarge the scope of the aquarium’s facilities and a rich land developer and local business owners want the land for upscale beachfront condos.
When a body is found floating in the local marina, Kristy and her veterinarian daughter, Abby work to discover the secrets of all the players involved in the race to raise the necessary money to buy the twenty acres. When a second murder occurs, Kristy needs to uncover the motive and killer before anyone else turns up dead and she needs to make her magazine’s deadline.
This is an enjoyable cozy read with entertaining characters, a plot full of red herrings and interesting marine life information interwoven throughout. Besides the primary mystery, you also have personal family intrigue occurring at the same time with Kristy’s mother. Ms. Schmitt was able to bring many story threads together in a satisfying conclusion that had me continually guessing.
I can recommend this amateur sleuth cozy mystery and I hope there are more to come.
“Something Fishy” by Lois Schmitt This was my first book by this author and if I had realized it was a cozy mystery, I probably would not have picked it up to read. But it was actually pretty good! It wasn’t the sappy kind of mystery that bores you. The setting taking place in an aquarium, made a big difference as to the overall book. Not only did you read the book and try to figure out who the murderers were, there were facts I also learned about aquariums. This is the second book in the series, and having not read the first, I can say it definitely can be read as a standalone (though now I do want to go back and read book #1). Clues were give throughout the book and some were easy to figure out. Some left you hanging a bit and I think the author did it on purpose to keep you intrigued. I actually felt exhausted at times for Kristy as she was a journalist trying to solve the murders but also trying to look out for her mother. Once her mom announced she was engaged, Kristy set out to see if her hunches were right that her mother’s fiancé was a scam artist. The author made sure the mystery was not clear cut as to who the murderer was by giving motive and opportunity that it could be multiple people. Would definitely recommend.
Something Fishy by Lois Schmitt is the first book in the Kristy Farrell Mystery series and held my interest throughout. There are multiple murders, scams, thefts, lies, and a whole lot more all set in Clam Cove, Long Island.
Ms. Schmitt writes with depth to the story with many twists and turns, clues, cops, and other law enforcement and, as a reporter, Kristy Farrell, tries to solve the cases. There’s a lot of action and reaction along with information and misinformation as the story unfolds. The detective she keeps crossing paths with would like nothing better than to arrest her and see her behind bars. He was a hard person to like.
Ms. Schmitt vividly depicted the aquarium, Katie’s home, the horse farm, and the waterfront area. The aquarium was involved in much of the story and many varieties of fish and other marine life and lots of facts were depicted. I liked Kristy’s family and how her daughter and her boyfriend helped with research and pulled together the clues. Kristy’s husband was supportive of her sleuthing but always cautioned her to be careful. The pets were a nice addition to the story as well. Finally, there was a nice closure with the cases dramatically solved and a happily ever in the offing for one of the characters.
Ms. Schmitt is a new to me author, and with her splendid writing style and a solid mystery, I can honestly say I look forward to reading more of her books.
This is an enjoyable mystery with the unusual setting of an aquarium. I like the idea of the amateur sleuth, Kristy, being a magazine feature writer. That gives her good reason to be active in the murder investigation. Her character is well developed. I had to laugh at the characterization of the crabby police detective. He didn't want Kristy involved but she showed him how to really uncover the murderer.
The novel got off to a bit of a confusing start with a missing person, a situation I felt fell flat, having no real purpose. The plot did develop well after that with two murders. There is a good balance between the murder investigation by Kristy and her own personal life, including a troubling situation with her mother.
I liked learning about marine life, like sharks. I appreciate the additional issue of commercial development of condos and big box stores verses aquarium expansion. This is a good novel to read for entertainment and for learning about marine animals and their care. Working for an aquarium can be a deadly occupation.
I received a complimentary digital copy of this book through Partners in Crime Virtual Book Tours. My comments are an independent and honest review.
There's more than one something fishy in Clam Shell Cove. And it's not all at the aquarium.
Much to Detective Wolfe's dismay, Kristy Farrell is in the midst of it all.
She and her daughter Abby have their hands full trying to figure out why friends keep dying. Also, they need to prove Kristy's mother's boyfriend is a scam artist before the two up and marry.
I was able to figure out who the murderer is, but went back and forth a bit before settling on my first choice. The why and even the how was hidden until nearly the end of the book.
Thank you, Ms Schmitt, for this cozy mystery. I'm looking forward to more Kristy Farrell books.
Something Fishy by Lois Schmitt is the second book in the Kristy Farrell Mystery series, and even though this is a new author for me and I had not read the previous book I had no problems reading the book as a stand alone. From the first couple pages this book pulled me in, and kept me turning the pages to see what was going to happen next. I found the storyline to be an interesting one, and plenty of suspects that could have done the crime. The author certainly came up with a intriguing way to kill someone don't believe I have every seen that one before. Having read this fun and interesting read, I am sure that I will go back and read the first book in the series and any other books this author may have written. I would definitely recommend this book to others. I received a copy of the book from the author and #partnersincrimevbt, and all opinions expressed here are my own.
This is the second instalment in the Kristy Farrell Mystery series. No need to read the first book to make sense of this story; everything that is important from the first mystery is mentioned in this book.
Kristy is working on several stories that involve the sea life aquarium of Clam Cove Long Island. One is the story where the aquarium wants to buy 20 acres of adjoining land to expand. For this the aquarium needs to raise 10 million dollars before next Summer. It stands to receive 6 million from the estate of Alicia Wilcox Chandler. That is until Katie the estate's executioner is found dead in a tank with sea snakes.
There are a lot of people that have an interest in the aquarium not being able to raise the 10 million. Could any of them have killed Katie? As Kristy investigates, more bad things happen to the aquarium and Kristy finds her suspects' list getting longer not shorter.
I enjoyed this mystery. Plenty of suspects with motive, means and opportunity. There's even a mystery to the side.
What I didn't care for was that evidence was hidden from me. Kristy would find a photo that she'd find interesting, but not tell what was in the picture. A necklace was found at a crime scene and not a description was given, but Kristy knew who the owner was. I want to know too so I can draw my own conclusions.
Land developer on one side, the aquarium with expansion plans and a pottery artist as a neighbor who doesn't want either. A missing fiance followed by an unexplained murder and a very worried multimillion-dollar executrix who is also Kristy Farrell's daughter's closest friend. Katie Chandler was set to donate 6 million dollars to the aquarium where she trains seals, as her Grandmother's will had outlined. Following a gala event at Katie's ancestral home, Katie is found dead, murdered. Who is the guilty party and what are they guilty of? This mystery has investigative reporter Kristy busy tracking down leads while doing her best to help her husband's vet clinic, do her part to keep her local paper/employer from being downsized, all while looking into the strange lights that appear off the beach one night a week. There is a lot to keep up track of in this book, but the author does a very good job of keeping the story flowing and the characters are developed nicely. A good read that made me want to go to my local aquarium the next time I am in the area.
Great read! From the first sentence to the last this mystery has you hooked! The characters are well thought out and written, and come alive pulling you deeper into the story and keep you guessing and trying to help them solve the murders and other mysterious happenings. Couple this with the information provided about the fish and wildlife living in the aquarium you never come out from under the books spell. Masterfully written, a must read for the mystery/thriller enthusiast
Thank you NetGalley and Second Dharma Books for this edition and hearing my honest review. Looking forward to reading more with you #partner
I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway. This book immediately gets you interested and keeps you guessing right to the end. This is the second book in the Kristy Farrell Mystery series. I hadn't read the first one but I plan on reading it now.
About the Book This is the second book in the series and even though this book refers back to Kristy’s first dip into the amateur sleuth world, I read it perfectly fine as a stand alone.
Kristy is writer for Animal Advocate Magazine. Kristy is working on a story about a 20 acre land acquisition. There are two groups vying to purchase the land. The Clam Cove Aquarium who want to expand their services of helping and researching marine wildlife while a land developer, Lucien Moray, wants the land to build fancy waterfront condos. There is also a third party, Ruby Diamond, that wants the land to stay totally unused.
What started out as a missing fiancée becomes two murders that Kristy feels like are related to the land acquisition. Will Kristy find out the truth before she becomes a shark snack?!? {insert theme music from JAWS}
My Thoughts
I thought this was a well written and very enjoyable cozy mystery. I like the mystery itself and thought that the author did a beautiful job of having just the right amount of suspects. The book had an interesting plot line but was straightforward enough that I never felt confused.
I liked the characters and the animal loving vibe of the book. Kristy writes for a magazine focusing on animals, Kristy’s husband and daughter are both vets, her brother is a reptile curator at a zoo (which is the setting of the first book), and the setting of the current murder is at an aquarium. With all that animal love, we get some interesting animal facts tossed into the book which I appreciated!
The ending wrapped up nicely with a little preview of Kristy’s next mystery!
With all the attention in recent years on environmental issues, Something Fishy is topical as well as entertaining. It also happens to be a very good puzzler for mystery fans who love to do a little detecting along with the protagonist.
Aided and abetted by her daughter, veterinarian Abby, magazine reporter Kristy sets out to do two things, find the missing Sam and figure out who killed the fish keeper and why. Had Jack gotten too deeply involved in the contention between the aquarium and a developer over a piece of prime real estate? Before long, the duo come up with some intriguing leads but then another body turns up. In the meantime, Kristy is also highly suspicious of her mom’s new fiance who surely is too good to be true.
Enjoyable characters and a thoughtful plot made this a story I didn’t want to put down and I was actually kind of sorry when I came to the end. Other than occasional word or phrase choices that are a little odd, Something Fishy is well written and free of the flowery language so often found in cozy mysteries; in fact, I found myself enjoying the simple and comfortable flow of Ms. Schmitt’s prose. This book is my introduction to the author and I intend to go get the first one, Monkey Business, but I don’t know if she intends to write more in the series. I hope so!
I absolutely loved this book! Something Fishy is the first book that I have read by author, Lois Schmitt. It is the second book in the Kristy Farrell Mystery series. I did not get the opportunity to read the first book. I will have to definitely check it out! But I was not lost at all. I loved the way the author made everyone look suspicious. I love it when I cannot figure out who the “bad guy” is. Louis Scmitt has a wonderful way of writing to make you feel like you are right there with the characters. I could easily imagine everything. I loved Kristy Farrell! She is a lovable character and her daughter, Katie is very likable as well. I really enjoyed the way there was more than one mystery to solve in this book. You can tell the author took her time writing this and planned everything out, just so. There are clues sprinkled throughout the book and it all plays out perfectly. No loose ends in this book! ☆☆☆☆☆/5 stars from me! I highly recommend this book to all of you cozy mystery lovers. If you want to go on a mystery adventure, let this book take you away!
The second in the Kristy Farrell Mysteries centers around an aquarium expansion. Reporter Kristy's boss encourages her to cover a murder mystery to increase circulation of the struggling wildlife magazine. Besides the backdrop of wildlife conservation in each mystery, I am enjoying the longer character arcs. Kristy's job is not secure, and her husband's veterinary clinic is in danger from a competitor.
Firstly, I want to thank the publishers Encircle Publications and Netgalley for providing a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This will be a spoiler-free review.
I rated it 3.5 stars, rounded down to 3 stars on NetGalley and Goodreads.
I don’t read many mysteries so I didn’t know what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. I read this short book in one sitting and I was glued to the pages, eager to find out what would happen next.
In terms of plot, it was a standard murder mystery, though it was interesting to see it from a journalist’s perspective. I figured out who the culprit was early on, but it didn’t hinder my enjoyment of the story at all, I remained intrigued by the events and I was guessing and second-guessing every character right along Kristy.
Throughout this book, the strong animal and environment conservation subject is present in all the characters’ lives and it has a huge role in the story. Not only did it make it more enjoyable for me, but it was even somewhat informative and it sends a good message.
With that being said, I did have some issues with this book, hence the 3.5 rating.
I couldn’t relate to any of the characters and that made it hard for me to care about what happened to them. I felt a bit detached from them, even, due to the contrast in lifestyle. Kristy, the main character, is a fifty-year-old journalist working for an animal magazine and she always works hard to uncover the truth and do what’s right. I liked her, but again, I felt no real emotional attachment to her.
The writing was another aspect that wasn’t quite satisfactory. I found both the description and dialogue parts a bit lacking. The descriptions were too simple and short, and I had trouble picturing the places. The dialogue was a bit flat and plain for a mystery. I suppose I was just hoping for some more elaborate writing.
Overall, despite my issues with this book, I really did enjoy it. I was thoroughly intrigued the entire time and I think this is a short, cozy mystery great for fans of this genre.
Something Fishy was an intriguing mystery that caught my attention and held it until the end.
The story is about a missing attorney and a wildlife magazine reporter who things his disappearance may be related to her latest story. Then a body is found in a nearby inlet. But if that isn't enough soon the aquarium is plagued with accident after accident.
The story is well executed, easy to follow, and offers a surprising ending.
