If they expected silence, they hired the wrong woman.
Caroline Bragg’s life has never been better. She and Brandon Lancaster are taking their relationship to the next level, and she has a new dream job as legal counsel for Praecursoria—a research lab that is making waves with its cutting-edge genetic therapies. The company’s leukemia treatments even promise to save desperately sick kids—kids like eleven-year-old Bethany, a critically ill foster child at Brandon’s foster home.
When Caroline’s enthusiastic boss wants to enroll Bethany in experimental trials prematurely, Caroline objects, putting her at odds with her colleagues. They claim the only goal at Praecursoria is to save lives. But does someone have another agenda?
Brandon faces his own crisis. As laws governing foster homes shift, he’s on the brink of losing the group home he’s worked so hard to build. When Caroline learns he’s a Praecursoria investor, it becomes legally impossible to confide in him. Will the secrets she keeps become a wedge that separates them forever? And can she save Bethany from the very treatments designed to heal her?
This latest romantic legal thriller by bestseller Cara Putman shines a light on the shadowy world of scientific secrets and corporate vendettas—and the ethical dilemmas that plague the place where science and commerce meet.
“I loved Cara Putman’s Lethal Intent and rooted for her heroine Caroline Bragg through every twist and turn. This legal thriller perfectly captures what it’s like to grow from law clerk to lawyer, and when Caroline finds herself faced with a heartbreaking ethical dilemma that leads to the corporate battle of her life, she confronts the challenge with strength and resources she never knew she had. Putman seamlessly blends the story with a wonderfully inspiring romance, too. Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of Lethal Intent!” --Lisa Scottoline, New York Times bestelling author of 30 novels, including her upcoming, After Anna.
“Intriguing characters. Romantic tension. Edge-of-your-seat suspense. And a fast-paced ending that will leave you exhausted (in a good way!).” —Robert Whitlow, award-winning author of Promised Land

Q & A with Author Cara Putman
Readers love the twists and turns in your novels that keep them guessing until the very end. How do you create such intricate plots?
The twists and turns evolve over the course of the writing. Usually, I start with a few in mind. Then as I’m writing I discover additional ways to give the main characters more challenges than they anticipated. With Lethal Intent, lawmakers contributed to the twists and turns for Brandon. Between when he first appeared in Beyond Justice to Lethal Intent, the law regarding group foster homes changed, but the regulations haven’t been finalized in Virginia. Trying to write in the realistic way I like became very challenging, but hopefully that makes it more real for readers.

What made you write this story? How is this novel different from your previous books?
I’ve “known” Caroline for several books, but when she stepped into the limelight I realized I had to dig deep to discover what makes her unique and interesting. I also wanted to look at the realities and wonders of what research scientists are doing. I never expected to dig deep into the science of Car-T cell research, but I realized just how amazing what doctors and scientists are doing really is. I’d watched a friend walk a similar journey to Brandon’s with his foster child, and I wanted to capture that strength and uncertainty. My friend is truly my hero in the way she battled for her son and did what it took to give him a chance…even when it meant moving across the country to participate in clinical trials. I hope some of that emotional reality is captured in a way that honors those who have lived it while also highlighting the process and challenges of work in that cutting-edge space.
What do you think a romance element adds to a mystery/suspense storyline?
Romance helps keep a human, emotional element front and center in mystery/suspense. Without that thread, it can be very easy to focus on the action. As a reader, the books that stick with me are the ones that have richly drawn characters who make me feel for them. A good romance definitely helps. It also makes the story more real, because we may not stare down someone holding a gun, but we’ve all had those moments where we wonder if he/she likes us and where the friendship is going.
What do you think makes a mystery so compelling that readers can’t put it down?
As a reader I find it critical that a story have some type of ticking time element to keep me engaged. It can be subtle, but with a mystery I have to be vested. As a writer, I try to keep that front of mind. Readers want an experience that is outside their day-to-day. We want to feel and see things that are different and unique. This is even more so when we’re reading a mystery or suspense. So keeping that sense of pacing and series of reader expectations at the forefront is critical to creating a mystery they can’t put down.
How did you research the setting for this series, Alexandria, VA, and Washington, DC?
I lived in Alexandria, Virginia, for the first eight years of my career out of college. I attended law school in Arlington, and spent a year working for a federal judge across the park from the White House. Basically I lived and worked where this series is set. It’s been so fun to relive that time while writing these books. It’s a fun place to live and work, and it’s one many have visited or would like to. I’ve also been known to ask friends if an ice cream shop is still in Old Town, or haunt the website of restaurants like Georgia Brown’s to make sure I know what it looks like today and what the current menu contains.
How does Lethal Intent fit in conversation with your other novels? What common themes appear throughout your books? What will readers find in this latest novel that expands upon your earlier work?
A common theme that runs through Lethal Intent and earlier books is that there is always hope. Life is hard, throwing challenges at us, but there is always hope. This book continues the ripped from the headlines feel of the earlier books, we had no idea just how much as I was writing it! And it also has the theme of strong friendships and faith.
What should a reader expect from Lethal Intent?
Readers should expect a story that will tug them deeply into the pages and leave them with a sense of hope at the end. They will be reminded that they can make it through tough and uncertain times because they can rely on a God who doesn’t leave or forsake them and friends who will always show up for them. They will also be reminded that they are stronger than they believe.

About the author

Since the time I could read Nancy Drew, I have wanted to write mysteries. In 2005 I attended a book signing at my local Christian bookstore. The rest, as they say, is history. There I met Colleen Coble. With prompting from my husband, I shared my dream with Colleen. Since those infamous words, I've been writing award-winning books with the count currently climbing to 40 published and more in the works.
In addition to writing, I am a mom of four, attorney, Clinical Associate Professor at a Big Ten university who also runs a center, and all around crazy woman. Crazy about God, my husband, and my kids. I graduated with honors from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (Go Huskers!), George Mason Law School, and Purdue University's MBA program. You can learn more about my books on my website, which is easy to find because it's simply my name dot com. And if you'd like to read my legal suspense novella, Dying for Love, simply connect with me on my website, and I'll send you the link.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 22, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseCara Putman writes books that come alive and this is no exception. The well developed characters are passionate in what they believe in and it clearly comes though this beautiful, intriguing , amazing story.
Caroline Bragg, a lawyer who worked her way through law school has a date with Brandon Lancaster, a well-know retired football player for the Colts. He and Caroline met when he was a rookie. He now runs a group foster home he founded to enable foster siblings to stay together until they are adopted into a permanent family. Caroline has just accepted a new position as the attorney on staff for Praecursoria, a company involved in clinical trials for CAR T-cell therapies. The treatment could potentially save the lives of many young cancer patients. Caroline was hired to keep the legal aspects of the trials inline with the FDA guidelines. The staff at Praecursoria is eager to move ahead quickly, not only to save the lives of many kids, but for the personal financial gain this would afford them. It becomes apparent to Caroline that cutting corners doesn't seem to be a problem. Some strange situations occur, as well as the death of a staff member just before Caroline came onboard. While trying to figure this all out, she puts herself in some dangerous situations.
As Caroline and Brandon seemed to be growing closer and her job becomes more of a challenge it also creates a rift between them. Caroline feels she shouldn't share any of what is going on at work since Brandon is one of the investors and she is honoring the inside trader laws. Between the sometimes frightening and puzzling situations going on with work and the strain on their relationship Caroline and Brandon begin feeling much of what they are dealing with is insurmountable.
This is a difficult book to put down and even after turning the last page I gave much thought to the enormous amount of research that went into this very compelling story.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 17, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI love Cara Putman’s Hidden Justice series and it was fun to get to see a glimpse of all those characters in this book. Lethal Intent follows Caroline into a new job as corporate counsel for a small company on the leading edge of cancer treatments. The stakes couldn’t be higher even before people in the company started dying. Meanwhile Brandon is trying to save his group home in the middle of changing legislation and one of his kids is in one of Caroline’s company’s trials. The sweet story of their friendship and support of each other contrasts with the selfishness that ends up in the deaths of three people. I did not want this story to end.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 5, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseFTC Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book. These are my honest thoughts.
This one ran a little too close to home for me. There hasn’t been enough distance from WuVi yet, as it’s still ongoing in late 2021, so I’m not yet comfortable reading about similar things such as medical research trials in fictional stories – I get enough of that in the news, thanks. I did appreciate that this story was about finding a cure for cancer rather than a pandemic-type illness.
However, some of the medical research was similar to what I’ve been reading about WuVi treatments. The science of it was interesting, despite my not being fully comfortable with it. There was one comment about mouse DNA being included in a medicine within the story. That was disgusting, sure, but it made me wonder what other gross, mystery ingredients might be involved in creating modern-day medications. (I don’t really want to know, but it was interesting to think about for a few minutes. Sometimes, innocence really is bliss.)
The urgency, tension, and complex plot were rich throughout. The twists just kept coming! That, of course, kept me pretty riveted.
One thing I especially enjoyed was that the faith thread was well integrated into the story. It felt like an organic part of the events and leading character’s reactions and motivations.
The group foster homes for sibling groups were fantastic to feature. I loved Brandon’s heart for orphans and displaced youths. His compassion was well displayed in every chapter.
Something that confused me: If several of the characters (including the leading lady) were in the Hidden Justice series as well as Flight Risk, AND the author’s note specifically linked all five books as having been related… why would these books NOT be assigned and marketed as a five-book series instead of as a trilogy and two stand-alone books? The books do not stand alone. I’ve read all five, and they’re definitely thickly related to each other. I’m very glad I read them in order, and I would recommend they be read in order. I would have felt like I missed lots of good stuff about the recurring characters if I had not read them in order.
Content: unwed pregnancy
- Reviewed in the United States on September 9, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWhen Caroline gets a job as an attorney with an upstart research lab, she has no idea how the job will affect her life as well as those around her. Soon three people at the company are dead and she feels the net closing in on her even as she searches for answers where there were supposed to be no questions. There remained some loose threads at the end but all in all it was a good read full of suspense.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 3, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThere’s a lot to this book. I’m unfamiliar with the science behind the company in this book. Unfortunately, the suspense is all too believable. I am wondering if there will be a sequel. There are a number of stories that are left just with a hint that a hopeful resolution is possible. Great characters and relationship development throughout the book. Can hardly wait to see what comes next from this author.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 12, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI would have given this book 5 stars except for thing that spoils a book for me. The perpetrator unloaded all his ugly details to the victim. The whole plot is revealed and explained. This is totally unrealistic and unlikely to happen in real life.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 25, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis was a great read. There wasn't much suspense but a lot of mystery. A doctor and several lab people died because of greed. Also a love story. Recommended.
